Less is more...but dream BIG

Its true the idea of simplifying isn't new.
sim·pli·fy
  sim·pli·fied, sim·pli·fy·ing, sim·pli·fies
To make simple or simpler, as:
a. To reduce in complexity or extent.
b. To reduce to fundamental parts.
c. To make easier to understand.

Many people are moving out into the country to get a taste of the simple life ( and I'm not talking about that crappy show with Paris Hilton) I'm talking about less traffic, and more fresh air. Less stores, and more trees. Less fast food, more real food.

Its not a big farm we have over here in Herscher....its just a few acres but I have BIG HUGE dreams.
I want these 3.5 acres to feed people. Lots of people. I want to offer a better alternative to Jewel, Walmart and Aldi. I want to be a one stop shop for the best local pure produce you can find.

That's not all. I want families to come not just for their veggies but to see the animals and teach their kids that eggs do come from happy free chickens. That milk comes from a cow, and you can call her Rainie, and she loves apples.

I want kids to learn that dirt wont hurt them, and all our food grows in it. They can see the life stages  and know when a tomato is ready to pick. Understand that without bees none of this is possible.

I want lots of things for this year yet none of them are really things. You see I want less....but dream so much more.

Chickie Treat

Good morning!!
I'm sure you are well aware of the sub arctic temps we are having in our neck of the woods fields at the moment. Let me assure you that all the animals here on the farm have appropriate shelter. Some are even wearing blankets. I have been bundling up about 4-5 times each day and checking everyone's bedding, food, water and sometimes their temperature.....just to make sure.

Now lets talk chickens! I know... I know... big surprise right? Well I just love those feather brains, and I cant help it. Did you know chickens loooooooove oatmeal? Well they definitely do.

This morning I mixed up some nice hot oatmeal for my girls (and a couple boys) and they went crazy for it.

Its just quick oats and some dried fruit, put in enough water to warm everything up and give you a consistency of bread dough. This will come in handy when dishing it out.

I take the bowl of oats out to the coop then put scoops of it on a few little plates so everyone gets their fair share

Here is the craziness .....

Did I mention they loooooooved it?

After their warm breakfast everyone hopped right back up on the roosts to snuggle.

Stay warm!
